"In 1942, Robinson was drafted and assigned to a segregated Army cavalry unit in Fort Riley, Kansas." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Robinson) Although the Army's initial guidelines were "race-neutral", very few black applicants were accepted into Officer Candidate School. Robinson soon became close friends with Truman Gibson. Finishing Officer Candidate School, Jackie was made a second lieutenant in January, 1943.
Also by then, Jackie and Rachel Isum were formally engaged(On February 10, 1946, Robinson and Isum were married). "After receiving his commission, Robinson was reassigned to Fort Hood, Texas, where he joined the 761st "Black Panthers" Tank Battalion." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Robinson) On the weekends, he often would go visit Karl Downs, who was Robinson's church pastor at the United Methodist Church while he attended PJC. However, on July 6, 1944, Jackie Robinson's military career seemed to be at its end. "While awaiting results of hospital tests on the ankle he had injured in junior college, Robinson boarded an Army bus with a fellow officer's wife; although the Army had commissioned its own unsegregated bus line, the bus driver ordered Robinson to move to the back of the bus."(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Robinson) He obviously would refuse, leading to his arrest, leading to his transfer to 785th Battalion, where he was charged with multiple offenses. This incident would lead to Robinson's future interests in the Civil Rights Movement. Robinson got his court-martial in August later that year, where he was charged for only 2 counts of insubordination during questioning. Robinson was then again transferred, this time to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. While there, he met a former player of the Kansas City Monarchs, who encouraged Jackie to try out for the team. Robinson had never seen combat.
